"Apple Trees", a most interesting
village, surrounded by apple and chestnut trees on its north-eastern
side and olive groves on the south-western one. It has an
exceptionally beautiful church of an incredible
history. It was built in
mid-18th century, during the Turkish occupation, in such a
way that its exterior, without belfry and other religious
trimmings, did not betray the true nature and purpose of the
structure. Its interior took 30 years to finish. The overall
design and construction with perfect acoustics and light structure
are a miracle of engineering. The frescos
and superbly crafted iconostasis are a pleasure
to behold. Attending Sunday morning Mass, a wedding or a christening
ceremony always leaves you with a touch of the mystical
and the divine. There is also a tiny, charming museum
where the dying crafts of the area have found a haven that
offers them protection from the tidal wave of excessive progress,
commercialization and trivialization. Last but not least,
Milies is the terminus of a narrow gauge
railway line built in late 19th century by Evaristode Chirico, father of the famous surrealist
artist Giorgio de Chirico. Today the train
is in operation only for tourist purposes
and it offers one of thefavourite excursions
for small and big children.
